When investing in a beautiful winter piece, a crucial question arises during the fitting: Is it really the right size? While a coat is meant to enhance us and protect us, a bad cut can quickly shorten the silhouette or give a sloppy look. For a long time, it was thought that simply going "one size up to be comfortable" was enough, but elegance lies in the precision of the drape. To help you decide in front of your mirror, La Canadienne deciphers the unmistakable signs.
THE GOLDEN RULE: THE SHOULDERS
To make the right choice, you must first look at the upper body. This is the only point that a tailor can almost never correct. The shoulder seam should rest exactly on your shoulder bone. This is the secret to a structured silhouette.
If it's too big: The seam falls loosely on the arm. Result: you look smaller and the outfit lacks poise.
If it's too small: The seam goes up towards the neck and the collar tends to gape.
Exception: "Oversize" or "dropped shoulder" cuts embrace this volume, but the collar must always remain flat.

SLEEVES AND LENGTH: HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE?
The choice of lengths depends on your body shape and intended use. Here are the main benchmarks:
|
Areas |
TOO SHORT |
TOO LONG |
IDEAL |
|
Sleeves |
Shows the wrist or watch |
Covers knuckles or fingers |
Stops at the junction of the wrist / base of the thumb |
|
Length (Petite size) |
Stops mid-buttocks (cuts the line) |
Goes below the knee (shortens the silhouette) |
Mid-thigh or just above the knee |
|
Length (Tall size) |
Jacket length (sometimes too short) |
Almost drags on the ground |
Mid-calf to structure the look |
A slightly long sleeve is very easy to alter. A sleeve that is too short is often a deal-breaker.
THE "WINTER SWEATER" TEST: EASE OF MOVEMENT
The success of a fitting lies in real-world conditions.
A winter coat should never be tried on with a t-shirt.
The Test: Put on your thickest sweater or a suit jacket underneath.
-
Too small: "X" shaped creases appear around the closed button (the fabric pulls). You feel "tied up."
-
Too big: You can fit more than two closed fists between your chest and the buttoned coat (unless it's an oversized cut). Cold air is likely to rush in.
THE SIGNS ON THE BACK (HIDDEN ELEGANCE)
We often forget to look at ourselves from behind, but that's where the overall look is determined:
THE VERTICAL FOLD: THE SIGN OF "TOO BIG" If you notice an excess of fabric that forms vertical folds hanging like a curtain down the back, it means the coat is too wide. It should follow the curve of the back without molding it.
THE VENT: THE SIGN OF "TOO SMALL" If the vent at the bottom of the back remains open when you are standing still, it means the coat is too tight at the hips. It should remain naturally closed.

OUR ALTERATION ADVICE AT LA CANADIENNE
Before returning a beloved item, know what can be altered and what cannot:
Easy alterations: Shortening sleeves that are too long or slightly adjusting the overall length of the coat. For these adjustments, our workshops located in Lyon, as well as Annemasse, particularly for shearling and furs, and Paris for your small winter alterations, are at your disposal. Our leather and textile experts will perfect the drape of your item for a custom fit. Discover our workshop services
Complex alterations (to avoid): Narrowing the shoulders or lengthening sleeves (often impossible without leaving marks).
IN SUMMARY
Knowing if a coat fits you is not just a matter of feeling, it's a matter of proportions:
-
Pay attention to the shoulders first: this is the foundation of the garment's structure.
-
Check for ease of movement with a thick sweater: neither tight nor baggy.
-
Don't be afraid of slightly long sleeves: this can be easily corrected in our Lyon workshops.
At La Canadienne, we select our cuts to fit just right. If you're hesitant between two sizes for winter, choose the one that allows for movement.
