Maintenance
Garment care
Garment care is an integral part of a garment's life. It is important to respect the materials and components of each piece, especially when it comes to leather or fur, materials that evolve over time.
La Canadienne offers a cleaning service (degreasing) that allows leathers, shearling, and furs to be cleaned using a traditional process specific to leather. A tailor-made service that respects the particularities of each garment to make it last longer.

Maintenance Tips
For leather
As leather is a living material, it does not require daily maintenance.
Every six months, or after rain,
waterproof your dry garment.
We recommend having your garment degreased every 2-3 years (cleaning, re-dyeing, waterproofing), to restore its shine and unify its color.
After rain:
- Allow your garment to dry away from any heat source.
- Once the garment is dry, apply a waterproofing agent.
If you get a grease stain:
- Apply Sommières clay to the stain. It is a very absorbent clay.
- Gently rub the stain with a soft cloth or your finger, leaving some clay on it.
- Leave on for a few hours (overnight, for example).
- Gently rub or brush to remove the clay.
For suede and nubuck
Every 2 to 3 years, take advantage of the summer to entrust us with your garment for a degreasing (cleaning, waterproofing) to restore its shine.
Apply a waterproofing spray every six months. Waterproof outdoors, holding the aerosol about thirty centimeters from the garment. Pay particular attention to the shoulder area.
After rain:
- Let dry.
- Gently brush the leather with a nubuck brush to clean it.
- Apply a waterproofing spray.
If you get a grease stain:
- Apply Sommières clay to the stain. It is a very absorbent clay.
- Gently rub the stain with a soft cloth or your finger, leaving some clay on it.
- Leave on for a few hours (e.g., overnight).
- Gently rub or brush to remove the clay.
For the fur
We recommend degreasing your fur every 2 to 3 years (cleaning) to restore its shine. Preferably entrust us with your maintenance work in the spring so that you are deprived of your garment for the shortest possible time in winter.
How to store your fur garment at home:
- Place it in a cotton cover (a cover made of another material could alter the quality of the fur).
- Hang it in a cool, dry place, away from light, with moth repellent.
Caring for your fur garment after rain:
- Shake your garment to remove as much water as possible.
- Dry your fur on a hanger. Do not dry it near a heat source.
- When dry, simply shake and comb it.
For cleaning, we recommend calling a fur degreasing specialist. It is a noble material that requires artisanal and specific expertise.
For down jackets and parkas
Puffer jackets and parkas require regular care to maintain their properties and original shine. Water-repellent and waterproof properties can be diminished by dust, dirt, or sometimes even perspiration.
Don't wait until the last minute to spruce up your down jacket. At the end of each winter, wash, dry, and hang your down jacket or parka so that you find your garment like new the following season.
Hand care
- Empty your pockets and remove the detachable fur from your hood if there is any.
- Immerse your down jacket in soapy water at room temperature (max 30°C).
- Use a mild cleaner or a special down cleaner. Do not use fabric softener or detergent.
- Rub your entire down jacket and be sure to pay special attention to stained areas.
- Rinse and gently wring out your garment without ever twisting it.
Washing machine care
If the brand allows machine washing, we recommend the following tips:
- Empty your pockets and remove the detachable fur from your hood if there is any.
- Close your down jacket, whether it has a button closure or a double-slider zipper closure.
- Place your down jacket in your machine with your dirty laundry, which will allow constant agitation and aeration of the down. However, do not overfill the machine.
- Use a mild cleaner (or a few Marseille soap flakes in small quantities) or a special down cleaner. Do not use fabric softener or detergent.
- Activate the synthetic or delicate program (maximum 40°C) with the gentlest spin possible so as not to destroy the fibers.
